Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson One hundred and eighty: Word Problems

Sometimes people get paid in intervals smaller than an hour. Consider this example.

Sue gets paid $4 per every 15 minutes for raking leaves.
How much will she get paid for raking leaves
    for 3 hours?

This is a two step problem. First we must find out how much Sue gets paid per hour and then we can find out how much she gets paid for 3 hours of raking leaves.

      $4 per 15 minutes x 4 periods of 15 minutes per hour = $16 per hour
      $16 per hour x 3 hours = $48

NOTE: You can figure out how many 15 minute periods are in an hour by dividing 60 by 15. (60/15=4)

Here's another example:

Jim gets paid $2 every 5 minutes for watering the grass.
How much will he get paid for watering the grass
    for 2 hours?

This is a two step multiplication problem:

       $2 per 5 minutes x 12 periods of 5 minutes per hour = $24 per hour
       $24 per hour x 2 hours = $48

NOTE: You can figure out how many 5 minute periods are in an hour by dividing 60 by 5. (60/5=12)

Now you get to try some of these.
