Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson One hundred and seventy-nine: Word Problems

This bunch of word problems will involve the cost per unit of volume. For instance, consider the following problem.

Bob pays 16 dollars for 8 gallons of gas.
How much is he being charged per gallon
      of gas?

If we buy 8 of something and pay 16 dollars, we must divide in order to figure out how much each item cost. So:

        16 dollars / 8 gallons = 2 dollars per gallon

Here's another example:

Sue buys 3 gallons of orange juice for 9 dollars.
How much does she pay per gallon of juice?

If we buy 3 of something and pay 9 dollars, we must divide in order to figure out how much each item cost. So:

        9 dollars / 3 gallons = 3 dollars per gallon

Now you get to try some of these.
