Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson One hundred and forty-four: VOLUME: pints, quarts, gallons

Ice cream is sometimes sold by the 1/2 gallon (which is the same as 2 quarts). Milk is often sold by the pint, the quart, or the gallon. You should check out some examples from the kitchen or the store.

Recall these conversion factors.

           2 pints = 1 quart
          4 quarts = 1 gallon
           8 pints = 1 gallon

Here are some conversion examples between quarts and gallons:

          quarts | gallons
        ----------|---------
           4 | 1
           8 | 2
          12 | 3
          16 | 4
                  |

Now for a few pints, quarts, and gallon simplification examples:

   A) 31 pints = ?? gallons, ?? quarts, ?? pints

       1) Divide: 31 / 8 = 3 r7 (gallons = 3)
       2) Divide Remainder; 7 / 2 = 3 r1 (quarts = 3)
       3) Remainder is number of pints leftover

       ANSWER: 3 gallons, 3 quarts, 1 pint

   B) 45 pints = ?? gallons, ?? quarts, ?? pints

       1) Divide: 45 / 8 = 5 r5 (gallons = 5)
       2) Divide Remainder: 5 / 2 = 2 r1 (quarts = 2)
       3) Remainder is number of pints leftover.

       ANSWER: 5 gallons, 2 quarts, 1 pints
