Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson One hundred and forty-three: VOLUME: ounces, cups, pints

Measuring volume involves ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. In this lesson we discuss ounces, cups, and pints.

        8 ounces = 1 cup
        2 cups = 1 pint
       16 ounces = 1 pint

A can of soda usually contains 12 ounces. This amount is more than a cup and less than a pint. Water is sometimes sold in bottles containing a single pint (which is the same as two cups or sixteen ounces).

The following examples show equivalent amounts in ounces and cups:

          ounces | cups
        ----------|---------
           16 | 2
           24 | 3
           32 | 4
           40 | 5
                  |
