Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson One hundred and forty-nine: TIME

You are no doubt familiar with hours, minutes and seconds. You probably know that:

      60 seconds = 1 minute
      60 minutes = 1 hour
      24 hours = 1 day

But, can you convert a large amount of minutes or seconds into hours or minutes?

        133 seconds = ___ minutes and ___ seconds

To simplify seconds into minutes and seconds you must figure out
how many sets of 60 seconds you can get out of the original number
    of seconds.

         133/60 = 2 r13

So, in this case you can get 2 minute's worth of seconds out of 133
seconds with 13 seconds left over.

    ANSWER: 133 seconds = 2 minutes and 13 seconds.

It's better to write our answer like this: 2:13 (although some
people may say that it is unclear here whether you are talking
about 2 hours and thirteen minutes or two minutes and thirteen
    seconds).

Here's another quick example:

    Simplify: 155 minutes.

    SOLUTION: Divide 155 by 60. 155/60 = 2 r35

    ANSWER: 2:35
