Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson One hundred and twenty: Word Story Problems

Here is a simple word story problem involving the subtraction of decimal values.

Jane went to the store and bought some
stuff. She had to pay $4.55 for all the
stuff. She paid with a ten dollar bill.
How much change did she get back?

To solve this problem you just subtract:

        10.00
       - 4.55
      ---------
         5.45

Sometimes it takes more than one step to solve a word problem. Consider this example:

Norma went to the store and bought some candy
for $2.37 and a drink for $1.56. Norma paid for
this stuff with a five dollar bill. How much did
     she get back in change?

STEP ONE: Figure out how much the candy and drink cost.

          $2.37
        + $1.56
       ---------
          $3.93

STEP TWO: Figure out how much change she got back.

         $5.00
       - $3.93
      ----------
         $1.07

Now you get to try a few for yourself.
