Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson One hundred and thirty-five: Rounding and Dividing

Estimating quotients with larger numbers calls for a slightly altered strategy from the one we used in the last lesson.

    PROBLEM: 3233 / 32 =

    STRATEGY:
       1) round the dividend to the nearest 1000
       2) round the divisor to the nearest 10
       3) forget about the remainder

    ROUNDED PROBLEM: 3000 / 30 = 100

The actual answer to this problem is 101 r1 and so our estimate of
100 is really fairly close to the actual answer.

Here's another example:

Now take a look at these examples.

    PROBLEM: 4835 / 58 =

STRATEGY: round divisor to nearest 10, dividend to nearest 1000
              and forget about the remainder.

    ROUNDED PROBLEM: 5000 / 60 = 83

The actual answer to this problem is 83 r21 which real
    close to our rounded answer.
