Arithmetic Grade Four
Lesson One hundred and twelve: Adding Decimal Values
Consider the following batch of problems:
3.55 3.83
+ 2.75 + .17
-------- -------
6.30 4.00
2.58 1.64
+ 2.32 + 1.26
-------- --------
4.90 2.90
It is true that:
6.30 = 6.3
4.00 = 4.0 = 4
4.90 = 4.9
2.90 = 2.9
So, when we get an answer of 6.30, should we leave it as 6.30 or shorten it
to 6.3? Which is the better way to write it? The answer is, IT DEPENDS... We
will leave it at that. BUT for the problems in this unit leave 6.30 as 6.30
and DON'T shorten it to 6.3 even though 6.3 is equivalent to 6.30.
Now you get to try a few for yourself.
