Lesson Ninety-five: Parts of Wholes

Finding fractional parts of wholes is fairly easy. The following example shows how to find one-third of fifteen.

  PROBLEM:

          1/3 of 15 =

 1. DIVIDE THE WHOLE NUMBER BY THE DENOMINATOR IN THE FRACTION
 2. MULTIPLY THIS QUOTIENT BY THE NUMERATOR.

          15/3 = 5
          5 x 1 = 5

Here's another example:

  PROBLEM:

          1/4 of 20 =

  1. DIVIDE THE WHOLE NUMBER BY THE DENOMINATOR IN THE FRACTION:

          20 / 4 = 5

  2. MULTIPLY THIS QUOTIENT BY THE NUMERATOR:

         5 x 1 = 5

In the next group of problems you will solve several of these problems.

Now you get to try a few for yourself.
