  PROBLEM:  

          1/9 of 27 =

  1. DIVIDE THE WHOLE NUMBER BY THE DENOMINATOR IN THE FRACTION:
  
          27 / 9 = 3

  2. MULTIPLY THIS QUOTIENT BY THE NUMERATOR OF THE FRACTION:

         3 x 1 = 3
