Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson One hundred and nineteen: Mixed to Decimals

As we saw in the last lesson, adding to mixed numbers is sometimes easier if you convert them to decimals first. Consider the following examples:

       1 2/25 + 2 1/20 = 1.08 + 2.05 = 3.13

       2 3/20 + 1 1/4 = 2.15 + 1.25 = 3.40

If you really wanted to you could find equivalent fractions and then convert your fraction answer to a decimal like this:

       1 2/25 + 2 1/20 = 1 8/100 + 2 5/100 = 3 13/100 = 3.13

       2 3/20 + 1 1/4 = 2 15/100 + 1 25/100 = 3 40/100 = 3.40

This requires an extra step, but it still gets you the same answer.

Now you get to try a few for yourself.
