Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson One hundred forty: Miles Per Gallon

Here are two more cars to compare.

   CAR ONE: 300 miles on 5 gallons of gas.

      MPG = 300/5

      Fuel efficiency: 60 mpg

   CAR TWO: 450 miles on 10 gallons of gas.

      MPG = 450/10

      Fuel efficiency: 45 mpg

To find the fuel efficiency of a car divide the distance traveled by the amount of gas it took to travel that distance.

Often small cars are more fuel efficient than large cars. Also cars with more powerful engines tend to be less fuel efficient than less powerful cars. Fuel efficiency is just one thing people consider when purchasing a car. How important is fuel efficiency to you?
