Lesson One hundred thirty-eight: Word Story Problems

Sometimes the most important part of a division problem is the remainder. Here's a word story problem where the answer is the remainder to a division problem:

Joe has 40 boxes and 255 toy cars. If each
box can hold 6 toy cars, then how many extra
      toy cars will Joe have?

      SOLUTION:

        Method One: Divide: 255 / 6 = 40 r15
                    ANSWER: 15

        Method Two: Multiply: 40 x 6 = 240
                    Subtract: 255 - 240 = 15
                    ANSWER: 15
