Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson One hundred sixty-six: Coordinate Pairs

It is more proper to refer to the "dots" as points, but you probably get the idea either way. Also the x-axis is sometimes referred to as the horizontal axis and the y-axis is sometimes referred to as the vertical axis. So, when we describe the location of a point we also specify the horizontal value first and then the vertical value.

When you specify a point like this:

    (12,4)

you are specifying a coordinate pair. The first value is for the horizontal (x-axis) and the second value is for the vertical (y-axis).

In the next activity you will use the first method of describing the
location of a dot. You will enter the coordinate pair without spaces like
this:

      (7,11)

Remember the x-value always comes first and the y-value comes second.

Now you get to try a few for yourself.
