Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson One hundred and thirty-one: Dividing With More Digits

The steps you follow in division are always the same, but in long problems you have to repeat them until you run out of numbers needing to be divided.

           344 r1 1. DIVIDE (How many times will 13 fit into 44?)
        +------- 2. MULTIPLY (3 x 13 = 39)
     13 | 4473 3. SUBTRACT (44 - 39 = 5)
          39 4. BRING DOWN ( 7 )
----- 5. DIVIDE (How many times will 13 fit into 57?)
           57 6. MULTIPLY (4 x 13 = 52)
           52 7. SUBTRACT (57-52=5)
          ----- 8. BRING DOWN ( 3 )
53 9. DIVIDE (How many times will 13 fit into 53?)
            52 10. MULTIPLY (4 x 13 = 52)
           ---- 11. SUBTRACT (53-52=1)
             1 12. REMAINDER ( 1 )

Here's another example:

           482 r4
        +--------
    15 | 7234
          60
         -----
          123
          120
         -----
            34
            30
           ----
             4
