Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson Forty-four: Multiples of TEN

Study the following number sentences.

  10 x 6 = 60 4 x 10 = 40 2 x 100 = 200

  100 x 4 = 400 1000 x 1 = 1000 5 x 10 = 50

In each case we multiply either 10, 100, or 1000 by a single digit. We can rephrase each of these examples like this:

  10 x 6 = 60 six sets of ten equals sixty

  4 x 10 = 40 four sets of ten equals forty

2 x 100 = 200 two sets of one hundred equals two hundred

100 x 4 = 400 four sets of one hundred equals four hundred

1000 x 1 = 1000	one set of one thousand equals one thousand

  5 x 10 = 50 five sets of ten equals fifty

You get to try a few for yourself on the next page.
