Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson Six: Subtraction Review

In subtraction you take away one number from another. The best way to illustrate a subtraction problem is like this:

   8 - 5 = 3

Start with eight items, cross out five of them, and count the remaining items. In this case you start with eight red dots, you cross out five of them (the black x's), and you wind up with three red dots which aren't crossed out.

Here's another example:

   9 - 4 = 5

Start with nine items, cross out four of them, and count the remaining items. In this case you start with nine red dots, you cross out four of them (the black x's), and you wind up with five red dots which aren't crossed out.
