Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson Twenty-eight: Rounding to nearest 10

Remember these rules when rounding to the nearest 10:

Consider the following examples:

   66 -> 70             53 -> 50            199 -> 200
  235 -> 240            92 -> 90             95 -> 100

Rules for rounding:

1. If the number in the ones column is 4 or less round down. Example: 42 -> 40.
2. If the number in the ones column is 5 or more round up. Example: 45 -> 50.

Special Case:

If you have a number like 495 you have to remember that it will have to round up to 500. Many times students are confused by this situation.

Here are a few more examples to help you out:

   444 -> 450		671 -> 670		788 -> 790

   123 -> 120		235 -> 240		133 -> 130

  2344 -> 2340	       1999 -> 2000	       3995 -> 4000

What about 2220? What does it round off to the nearest 10? Here are a few examples to help you:

	1330 -> 1330		1400 -> 1400		50 -> 50

	2000 -> 2000		1900 -> 1900		10 -> 10
