Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson Nineteen: Division Review

Remember that we can draw pictures of word story problems. Think about this sample word story problem:

There are 42 fish in a big tank.
These fish are moved to 6 smaller tanks.
How many will there be in each smaller tank?

We could represent this story problem with six rows of x's like this:

      xxxxxxx
      xxxxxxx
      xxxxxxx
      xxxxxxx
      xxxxxxx
      xxxxxxx

We make six rows and we add an x to each row until we reach a total of 42 x's. Then we count the number of x's in each row. We wind up with 7 x's in each row.

     42 / 6 = 7

Here's another example:

There are 32 pancakes on a large grill.
An equal number of these pancakes will
be placed on each of 8 plates.
How many pancakes will be on each plate?

We could represent this story problem with 8 rows x's like this:

      xxxx
      xxxx
      xxxx
      xxxx
      xxxx
      xxxx
      xxxx
      xxxx

We make 8 rows of x's and keep adding x's to each row until we reach a total of 32 x's.

    32 / 8 = 4
