Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson Four: Addition Review

The addends are the numbers in an addition problem that you add together to produce the sum. Study these examples:
ADDENDSSUM
5 + 4 = 9
7 + 1 = 8
3 + 2 = 5
Actually, the numbers are the addends, the plus sign and the equals sign are operators.

Naturally, you can reverse the order of SUM and ADDENDS like this:
SUMADDENDS
9 = 5 + 4
8 = 7 + 1
5 = 3 + 2
Vertically arranged addition problems also have addends and sums:
ADDENDS

   5
  +3
  ---

SUM

   8
