Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson Four: Addition Review

The order of addends does not change the sum. For instance, both 6+1 and 1+6 produce a sum of 7:

    6 + 1 = 7

    1 + 6 = 7

This is also true when there are more than two addends. Study these examples:

  1 + 5 + 2 + 1 = 9

  5 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 9

  1 + 1 + 2 + 5 = 9

  2 + 1 + 1 + 5 = 9

This is also true when working with two-digit addends:

  35 + 21 = 56

  21 + 35 = 56
