Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson Fifty-six: Division with Remainders

Here's an example of a problem with a remainder.

     +-------
   8 | 4533

STEP ONE: DIVIDE Since 8 will not fit into 4, we skip the 4 and try 8 into 45. We can divide 8 into 45 5 times.

STEP TWO: MULTIPLY 5 x 8 = 40.

STEP THREE: SUBTRACT 45 - 40 = 5.

STEP FOUR: BRING DOWN Bring down the three to set up the next division step.

           5
        +--------
      8 | 4533
          40
         -----
           53

STEP FIVE: DIVIDE Divide 8 into 53.

STEP SIX: MULTIPLY 8 x 6 = 48.

STEP SEVEN: SUBTRACT 53 - 48 = 5.

STEP EIGHT: BRING DOWN Bring down the last tthree to set up the next division step.

           56
        +--------
      8 | 4533
          40
         -----
           53
           48
          ----
            53

STEP NINE: DIVIDE Divide 8 into 53.

STEP TEN: MULTIPLY 8 x 6 = 48.

STEP ELEVEN: SUBTRACT 53 - 48 = 5.

STEP TWELVE: REMAINDER Write your remainder after the rest of the answer.

           566 r5
        +--------
      8 | 4533
          40
         -----
           53
           48
          ----
            53
            48
           ----
             5

On the next page you will write only the remainders to the problems given to you.
