Lesson Fifty-five: Division with Remainders

Here's a step-by-step animation of the process of doing a division problem involving a three digit number being divided by a one digit number.
  • The Problem: 253/11
  • Divide: 11 into 25
  • Multiply: 2 * 11 = 22
  • Subtract: 25 - 22 = 3
  • Bring Down: 3
  • Divide: 11 into 33
  • Multiply: 3 * 11 = 33
  • Subtract: 33 - 33 = 0
  • ANSWER: 23

Here's another (non-animated) example. This one has a remainder.

            64 r 1
     	 +----
       5 | 321 1. Divide 5 into 32
           30 2. Multiply 5 x 6 = 30
          ---- 3. Subract 32 - 30 = 2
            21 4. Bring down the 1
            20 5. Divide 5 into 21
           ---- 6. Multiply 5 x 4 = 20
             1 7. Subtract 21 - 20 = 1
                               8. Write remainder

  Consider these two problems:

       +----- +-----
     5 | 333 5 | 555

In 333 / 5 we start dividing in the tens column and in 555 / 5 we
begin dividing in the hundreds column. WHY?

In 333 / 5, we cannot divide 3 by 5, but we can divide 33 by 5 and
so starting in the tens column makes sense.

In 555 / 5, we can divide 5 by 5 and so we start in the hundreds
     column.

On the next page you will write only the remainders to the problems given to you.
