Arithmetic Grade Four
Lesson Seventy-five: Converting Mixed Numbers To Improper Fractions
Converting Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions
Converting mixed numbers to improper fractions takes
two steps:
1. Multiply the whole number by the denominator.
2. Add this product to the numerator.
IF necessary, you must reduce your mixed number.
Example:
Mixed Number: 2 4/8
Step One: 2 * 8 = 16    (Multiply whole by denominator)
Step Two: 16 + 4 = 20    (Add product and numerator)
Improper Fraction: 20/8
Reduced: 5/2 (divide both the numerator and denominator of 20/8 by the GCF:
4).
Now you get to try a few.
