You will recall:

Adding Fractions With Like Denominators

But what happens if the answer is an improper fraction?

It is best to convert an improper fraction to a mixed number. Here's an example:

       7 5 12
      --- + --- = ----
       8 8 8

Convert improper fraction 12/8 to mixed number 1 4/8.

      Remember to reduce (if necessary): 1 4/8 = 1 1/2

In case you don't remember how to convert an improper fraction into a mixed number, here's a little reminder:

     Improper Fraction: 13/10

Conversion Step One: Divide 13 by 10.

Conversion Step Two: Write quotient as whole number.

Conversion Step Three: Write remainder as numerator written over
                             existing denominator.

Reduce the fraction portion of the mixed number, if necessary.
