Lesson Seventy-six: Converting Improper Fractions To Mixed Numbers
At this point you know what an improper fraction is and you know what a
mixed number is. Also you know how to convert a mixed number to an improper
fraction. What we talk about in this lesson is how to convert an improper
fraction to a mixed number. Here's the basic procedure.
Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers
There are three steps:
1. Divide the numerator by the denominator.
2. The quotient is your whole number.
3. The remainder is your numerator.
Example:
Improper Fraction: 31/10.
Step One: 31 divided by 10 equals 3 with a remainder of 1.
Step Two: The quotient was 3, so you use this as the whole number.
Step Three: The remainder was 1, so this is your new numerator.
Mixed Number: 3 1/10.
Example:
Improper Fraction: 22/5.
Step One: 22 divided by 5 equals 4 with a remainder of 2.
Step Two: The quotient was 4, so you use this as the whole number.
Step Three: The remainder was 2, so this is your new numerator.
Mixed Number: 4 2/5.
