Arithmetic Grade Four
Lesson Seventy-eight: Word Story Problems
We will do some word problems with fractions in this lesson.
Jasper had seven orange marbles and nine
green marbles. Write a fraction showing
what part of these marbles are orange.
Since there are 7 orange marbles and 9 green marbles, there are 16 marbles
in all. So, we can write the fraction 7/16 to represent the part of the
entire group of marbles that are orange.
Here's another word story problem for you to solve:
Jasper has 18 red onions and 8 white onions
Write a fraction showing what part of these
onions are white.
Jasper has a total of 18 (red) + 8 (white) onions which gives him a total of
26 onions in all. So, 8/18 represents the part of the entire collection of
onions that are white. We must reduce 8/18 to 4/9.
Now you get to do some of these yourself.
