Arithmetic Grade Four
Lesson Seventy-eight: Word Story Problems
We will do some word problems with fractions in this lesson.
Jasper had seven cups. Three cups were
full of orange juice. Write a fraction
showing how many of the cups were full.
Since there are 7 cups and 3 are full, the fraction 3/7 would represent the
number of full cups over the total number of cups.
Here's another word story problem for you to solve:
Jasper has 72 onions. Of these onions
27 are red onions. Write a fraction
showing how many onions are red.
Since there are 72 onions in all and 27 are red, the fraction 27/72 would
represent the number of red onions out of the total number of onions. BUT
WAIT, 27/72 should be reduced! We can reduce 27/72 to 3/8.
Now you get to do some of these yourself.
