A common example used to explain fractions is that of a pizza.


  Let's say that you have a pizza cut into 8
  equal pieces and that you eat 3 of those
  pieces. You could then say that you ate 3/8
  of those pieces.

Here's another pizza example:

  Let's say that you have a pizza cut into 10
  equal pieces and that you eat 4 of those
  pieces. You could then say that you ate 4/10
  of those pieces.
