Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson Sixty-one: Fraction Pictures

We can use fractions to represent portions of a whole. In the following examples part of a group are shaded. We make a fraction showing what part of the group is shaded by placing the number shaded over the total number.
FILLED IN CIRCLES: 6
TOTAL CIRCLES IN GROUP: 12
FRACTION: 6/12
FILLED IN CIRCLES: 3
TOTAL CIRCLES IN GROUP: 9
FRACTION: 3/9
FILLED IN CIRCLES: 23
TOTAL CIRCLES IN GROUP: 30
FRACTION: 23/30

You make a fraction by placing the filled part over the whole (using a slash between them):

   FILLED: 7
   WHOLE: 9
   FRACTION: 7/9
