Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson Seventy-four: Ordering Fractions

It is easy to tell that the following fractions are in order because they all have the same denominator.

     1 2 3 4 5 6 7
    --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
     8 8 8 8 8 8 8

When the denominators are different it takes a little more work to tell if a group of fractions are in order or not. Consider the following list.

    2 2 2 2 2 2 2
   --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
    15 11 9 7 5 4 3

With the numerators all equal it is a bit easier to tell that these are in order.

With the numerators and denominators all mixed up it takes even more effort to tell if a group of numbers are i order.

    2 4 3 5 1 3
   --- --- --- --- --- ---
    9 11 8 13 2 5

These fractions are in order, by the way.
