Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson Fifty-Three: Estimation, Rounding, and Division

Before we discuss estimation, rounding and division, let's try a few problems. First of all, take a look at this problem:

      3600 / 6 = ?

You probably recognize that 36 / 6 = 6, but how does that help us with 3600 / 6? Let's rewrite the problem with the answer like this:

              600
           -------
         6 | 3600

Notice that the 6 (from 36/6) gets written right above the hundreds column and we fill in the rest of the answer with zeroes.

Here's another example complete with the answer:

             800
          --------
        7 | 5600

Here we have 56 / 7 = 8 with zeroes filled in after the 8.

It might make you feel better if we check our answer by using multiplication (remember that multiplication is the opposite of division):

             800 x 7 = 5600

You get to try a few for yourself on the next page.
