Lesson Forty-six: Column Multiplication

Inspect this multiplication problem: 

      5
    x 7 
   -----
We know that 5 x 7 is 35, but the important thing here is that when we write our answer in vertical format, the 3 in 35 (which is in the tens column) will be written in the tens column in our answer, like this: 

      5
    x 7 
   -----
     35
