Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson Twenty-five: Carrying

Now for something a little more challenging. Take a look at this example:

   48
  +75
  ----

STEP ONE: Add the numbers in the ones column. If the the answer is greater than 9, then we must carry:

   1
   48
  +75
  ----
    3

STEP TWO: Add the numbers in the tens column (including the one which we carried). If the answer is 9 or less just write the answer in the tens column. If the answer is greater than 9 use the hundreds and the tens column.

   1
   48
  +75
  ----
  123

Here's another example:

   95
  +87
  ----

STEP ONE: Since the 5 and 7 in the ones column adds up to 12 and 12 is greater than 9, we must carry.

   1
   95
  +87
  ----
    2

STEP TWO: Adding up the numbers in the tens column we get 18. We use the we place the eighteen in the hundreds and tens column like this:

   1
   95
  +87
  ----
  182
