Arithmetic Grade Four

Lesson Sixty: Computing Averages

Finding Averages of Three Numbers - To find the average of three numbers you first find their sum and then you divide this sum by three.

     Compute the average: 34, 30, 35.

     STEP ONE: 34 + 30 + 35 = 99

     STEP TWO: 99 / 3 = 33

Here's another example:

     Compute the average: 50, 25, 75.

     STEP ONE: 50 + 25 + 75 = 150

     STEP TWO: 150 / 3 = 50

Here's one more example:

     Compute the average: 24, 29, 31.

     STEP ONE: 24 + 29 + 31 = 84

     STEP TWO: 84 / 3 = 28

You get to try a few for yourself on the next page.
