Arithmetic Grade Three

Lesson One hundred eighteen: Add and Multiply

Add and Multiply

Here's another example:

      ( 7 + 1 ) x 6

METHOD ONE: Add and Multiply - The most obvious thing you can do is add the numbers in the parentheses and then multiply that sum by the number following the multiplication sign.

     ( 7 + 1 ) x 6 =
         8 x 6 = 48

METHOD TWO: Distributive Property - The distributive property says that we can multiply first and then add, like this:

    ( 7 + 1 ) x 6 =
    7 x 6 + 1 x 6 =
     42 + 6 = 48

You can solve these problems either way. Actually it's best to use both methods and to learn to recognize problems which are easier with each method.
