Lesson One hundred and sixteen: Money


Inspect this multiplication problem:

  $4.56
   x  2 
  ------

To solve this problem, follow these steps:


  STEP ONE: multiply bottom number by ones digit of top number.

       6 x 2 = 12

  STEP TWO: carry and bring down.

     $4.56
      x  2 
      -----
         2

  STEP THREE: multiply bottom number by tens digit and add carried number.

       2 x 5 + 1 = 11

  STEP FOUR: carry and bring down.

      1 1
     $4.56
      x  2 
      -----
        12

  STEP FIVE: multiply bottom number by hundreds digit and add carried number.

      2 x 4 + 1 = 9

  STEP SIX: bring down and put the decimal point in the right spot.

       1 1
      $4.56
       x  2 
      -----
      $9.12

The only difference between this problem and the same problem without the decimal point, is that you have to put the decimal point in your answer.
