Lesson One hundred ten: The Distributive Property


Multiplication

Each of the following problems is an example of the distributive property in action.


  74 x 5 = 70 x 5 + 4 x 5

  12 x 2 = 10 x 2 + 2 x 2

  2 x 2 = 1 x 2 + 1 x 2

  97 x 3 = 90 x 3 + 7 x 3

Notice that the yellow number on the left side of the equal sign equals the sum of the yellow numbers on the right side of the equal sign.


Here's another example.


  57 x 8 = 50 * 8 + 7 * 8 = 400 + 56 = 456
