Arithmetic Grade Three

Now for something a little more challenging. Take a look at this example:

Next, add the numbers in the ones column:

We get 11. We place the 1 in the tens column and we carry the one. Next we add up the numbers in the tens column.

Next we add the numbers in the hundreds column:

Finally, we add up the numbers in the thousands column:

Here's another example:


   1905
  +2817
  -----

STEP ONE: Since the 5 and 7 in the ones column adds up to 12 and 12 is greater than 9, we must carry.

STEP TWO: Adding up the numbers in the tens column we get 2.

STEP THREE: Adding up the numbers in the hundreds column we get 17 and so we must carry to the thousands column.

Adding up the numbers in the thousands column we get 4.
