Arithmetic Grade Three

Lesson Forty-two: Addition and Multiplication

Multiplication can be thought of as a short cut for adding the same number over and over. Consider this example:

  5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20

Here we added four fives for a sum of 20. We can translate this addition problem to a multiplication problem like this:

  4 x 5 = 20

Here's another example:

  4 + 4 + 4 = 12

Here we add three fours for a sum of 12. We can write this as a multiplication problem like this:

  3 x 4 = 12
