We can represent multiplication problems with pictures:

The picture shows a large rectangle two cubes tall and five cubes wide. If
you count all the cubes you will find that there are 10 of them.
Here's another example:

3 x 3 = (9)
|
The picture shows a large rectangle three cubes tall and three cubes wide. If
you count all the cubes you will find that there are 9 of them.
