Arithmetic Grade Two

Lesson One hundred forty-two: Addition and Multiplication

Multiplication can be thought of as a short cut for adding the same number over and over. Consider this example:

  3 + 3 + 3 = (9)

Here we added three threes for a sum of 9. We can translate this addition problem to a multiplication problem like this:

  3 x 3 = 9

Here's another example:

  4 + 4 + 4 + 4 =

Here we add four fours. We can write this as a multiplication problem like this:

  4 x 4 = (16)
