Arithmetic Grade One

Lesson One hundred thirty-nine: Flipping Disks

Flipping Disks
possible --> might happen
impossible --> will not happen
certain --> will happen
NOTE: It might be a good idea to experiment with flipping a coin before beginning this lesson. Keep track of how many heads and tails you get and then have the student imagine a two-sided disk which is different colors on each side. (It would be even better if you actually have such a disk, but there's a good chance that you won't so imagination will have to do.) Explain that you can't get what you don't have and so if the target color is not on the coin, it is impossible to flip that coin and get the target color. If the target color is on the coin, then it is possible to flip and get the target color. The use of "OR" might be confusing to the student. Work with the student until the student can deal with "OR" statements.
