Arithmetic Grade One

Lesson One hundred thirty-seven: Half Past

Half Past The Hour
When the hour hand is between the 4 and the 5 and the minute hand is pointing at 6, the time is four thirty. Four thirty can be written as 4:30.
When the hour hand is between the 10 and the 11 and the minute hand is pointing at 6, the time is ten thirty. Ten thirty can be written as 10:30.
When the hour hand is between the 1 and the 2 and the minute hand is pointing at 6, the time is one thirty. One thirty can be written as 1:30.
There are 60 minutes in an hour. Count the minutes from the top of the clock to the bottom of the clock and you will count 30 minutes. This is why half past the hour is called something thirty.
NOTE: Read this lesson with the student. Explain that there are five minutes between each number around the clock. Help the student to count the minutes to the six. (This might be a good opportunity to practice counting by fives.) Draw an analog clock with the student. Try to get the student to put as much detail as possible into the drawing.
