Arithmetic Grade One

Lesson One hundred twenty-five: Measurement

Measurement
WEIGHT: We can measure how much something weighs by using pounds or kilograms.
VOLUME: We can measure how much something can hold by using cups, pints, or quarts. We can also use liters.
HEAT: We can measure heat using degrees. Degrees can be in Fahrenheit or Celcius. Thermometers are used to measure heat.
NOTE: We dealt with measuring length in the last few lessons. In this lesson we discuss weight, volume, and heat. It is important that the student be able to examine and/or experiment with several measuring devices for this lesson including: cup, pint, quart, and liter containers, items of various weights, a scale, and thermometers (although it might be a good idea to only allow the student to handle the thermometers in your presence).

Make sure that the student understands:

  1. That how much something can hold can be measured with cups, pints, quarts, or liters.
  2. That a quart holds more than a cup.
  3. That how much something weighs can be measured with a scale in pounds or kilograms.
  4. That temperature is measured using a thermometer.
