Arithmetic Grade One

Lesson One hundred eleven: Comparing Equations

Comparing Equations

There are symbols which can be used to compare two equations:

  > GREATER THAN
  < LESS THAN
  = EQUAL

Here are some examples showing how these symbols can be used:

   7 + 4 > 4 + 3 2 - 1 < 2 + 1

   6 + 6 = 6 + 6 8-2 > 7-5

  5 + 5 > 2 + 7 Means that 5 + 5 is larger than 2 + 7.

  6 + 7 < 9 - 9 Means that 6 + 7 is smaller than 9 + 9.

  8 - 1 = 8 - 1 Means that 8 - 1 is equal to 8 - 1.

NOTE: Spend time going over examples like these. Present a pair of equations and have the student decide which symbol to draw between them.
