Arithmetic Grade One

Lesson Ten: Comparing Numbers

Comparing Numbers

There are symbols which can be used to compare two numbers:

  >  GREATER THAN
  <  LESS THAN
  =  EQUAL

Here are some examples showing how these symbols can be used:

   4 > 3			5 < 11

   6 = 6			12 > 10

  15 > 7	Means that 15 is larger than 7.

  17 < 19	Means that 17 is smaller than 19.

  11 = 11	Means that 11 is equal to 11.

NOTE: Spend time going over examples like these. Present a number pair (with space between them) and have the student decide which symbol to draw between the numbers.
