Idioms

Idioms are sometimes humorous and they certainly make communication more interesting. If you don't know their meanings, they can also be confusing. So, it is a good idea to be familiar with the idioms commonly used by other people who speak English. Here are some more idioms:


  IDIOM					MEANING
to pig out				to eat too much
pigheaded				overly stubborn
hogwash					nonsense
pack rat				a person who saves everything
living high on the hog			living lavishly
as happy as a pig in mud		extremely happy
pigsty					messy or dirty room
when pigs fly				it will never happen
one-horse town				tiny town
horse sense				common sense
putting the cart before the horse	doing things in the wrong order
I could eat a horse			I'm very hungry
hold your horses			be patient
we have to hoof it			we must walk
charley horse				leg cramp

Here are three of these idioms used in sentences:

	I've been to Trona and it's a one-horse town!

	You might get a stomach ache if you pig out.

	This room is a pigsty!
