Multiple Meanings

Many words have more than one meaning. Here are some examples:


	letter:  1) a short message
		 2) an alphabetical symbol

	period:  1) an amount of time
		 2) a punctuation mark

	iron:    1) used to get wrinkles out of clothes
		 2) a mineral

	slice:   1) the act of cutting
		 2) a thin piece

	type:    1) kind of
		 2) to tap out letters

Here are some of these words used in sentences. Think about which meaning of the underlined word is being used in each sentence.

  Certain letters are called vowels.

  She wrote five letters to friends and relatives on Saturday.

  Jill used her mother's iron to prepare her clothes.

  What type of plant is that?
