Codes

One of the most famous codes is the Morse code. The Morse code is a system of dots and dashes which can be used to send messages. Most people are familiar with the SOS distress signal which is made up of three dots, three dashes, and three dots.

A telegraph is used to tap out the dots and the dashes. The dots correspond to short taps and the dashes correspond to long taps. The telegraph operator pauses slightly between letters. This way a D (-..) doesn't get confused with an N (_.) followed by an E (.).
